INDIANAPOLIS – Penn’s girls soccer team and Mishawaka Marian’s boys soccer team each won state title Saturday at the IHSAA soccer finals at IUPUI.
The Lady Kingsmen won its first-ever championship and garnered a little revenge in defeating Brebeuf Jesuit 2-0. The Braves, which beat Penn 2-1 in 2015, put up a fight but a pair of second-half goals from Penn was the difference on Saturday. Maya Lacognato got Penn on the board in the 41st minute with a goal, assisted by Kristina Lynch. Ten minutes later, Lynch found the back of the net unassisted and Penn held on for the Class 2-A title.
Sommer Domal earned the shutout in net for Penn, which finishes 22-0-1, nationally ranked, and No. 1 in the state. Brebeuf closes 22-2-1.
In the boys Class 2-A championship, Evansville Memorial (19-4-1) used two Andrew Cross goals to beat Chesterton (16-4-2) 2-1. Owen Hallas had the lone goal for Chesterton.
Mishawaka Marian (18-5) repeated as Class 1-A boys champions after a 4-0 romp over Providence (18-3-1).
Roberto Ontiveros scored the only goal of the first half in the 33rd minute, but the Knights poured in on in the second half, using a pair of goals from Jordan Morris and one from Johnathan Tavarez to clinch its second overall title. Tavarez, Alejandro Rodela and Ed Morrison each had assists, and the combo of Hunter Renner (five saves) and Michael Cataldo pitched the shutout in net.
In the Class 1-A girls final, Andrean (17-3-1) used goals from Elly Samels and Alyssa Schichner to beat Lawrenceburg (13-6-3) by a 2-0 count. Hayley Reynolds earned the shutout in net for Andrean.
